Today is Data Privacy Day and as Malcolm X stated, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.”
So today, in honor of Data Privacy Day, I’m taking a stand and choosing privacy.
You should have noticed that all of my avatars/icons have changed to the new image pictured here. They will stay that way in protest until such time as things change in our current social media environment and with our government entities.
I and my company Internet Tech Specialists, will also be participating in the The Day We Fight Back campaign on February 11th 2014.
As I write this post, there’s fresh news on the NSA and the U.K. equivalent, the GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters). This entire situation has gotten out of control.
In the past, I also would have signed up to be a Champion with the Stay Safe Online organization but I feel that would have been hypocritical. I stopped to read all the companies that are so called Champions for the cause.
My mother always said that you are known by the company you keep. Stay Safe Online has some strange friends, I mean champions.
- Microsoft – one of the biggest spies on our data since shortly after the company’s inception.
- Intel – the co-creators of the Flame and God knows what other malware that is used to spy on everyone.
- Facebook – one of the largest violators of privacy in our current day.
At least Google didn’t sign up!
But strange bedfellows aside, it has been said that one person can make a difference. So, here’s my feeble attempt at making a difference.
And yes, my mother always said I was a dreamer too.
